Blood Cancer & Stem Cell Transplant in Korea

Seoul St. Mary’s: Asia’s Largest Hematology Centre

Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital performed Korea’s first hematopoietic stem cell transplant in 1983. In December 2024 it reached 10,000 stem cell transplants — a first in Korea — and it now performs more than 600 a year, making its Catholic Hematology Hospital the largest hematology centre in Asia.

Reported post-transplant survival at the centre runs 10–30% above comparable US figures. In transplant medicine that gap is largely a function of volume and continuity: a team doing 600 procedures a year manages complications differently from one doing 60.

The centre also runs Korea’s first dedicated hematology hospital and has published Korea’s best reported outcomes in multiple myeloma.

MEDIWIN holds a formal patient-referral agreement with Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital and has coordinated blood cancer treatment there.

Apa yang Diobati di Sini

Acute leukaemia — acute myeloid (AML) and acute lymphoblastic (ALL) leukaemia, including relapsed and refractory disease.

Chronic leukaemia — CML and CLL.

Lymphoma — Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin, including aggressive subtypes requiring transplant.

Multiple myeloma, where the centre reports Korea’s best treatment outcomes.

Myelodysplastic syndrome and aplastic anaemia.

Allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplantation, including haploidentical (half-matched family donor) transplants — which matter when no fully matched donor exists.

What MEDIWIN Does for a Blood Cancer Case

Blood cancer moves quickly and the paperwork is dense. What we handle:

— Translation of your bone marrow biopsy, cytogenetics, flow cytometry, molecular markers and treatment history

— Submission to the hematology department for review, with the donor situation stated up front

— Coordination of donor typing and evaluation where a family donor is available

— Written cost estimate and expected length of stay before travel

— Medical visa documentation for patient, donor and caregiver

— Professional interpretation at every consultation, including during admission

— Discharge summary, medication guidance and remote follow-up

If you have been told there are no further options, a second opinion is worth requesting. Relapsed and refractory disease is exactly where a high-volume centre sometimes sees a pathway another hospital did not. It may also confirm the original assessment. Minta pendapat kedua →

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

Possibly. Haploidentical transplantation uses a half-matched family donor — usually a parent, child or sibling — and is established practice at high-volume centres including Seoul St. Mary’s. Whether it is appropriate depends on the disease, its stage and the donor’s suitability, and that is the hematology team’s decision after reviewing your records.

Relapsed and refractory blood cancers are among the cases where a second opinion most often changes something, because treatment options in this area move quickly and differ between centres. Send your records and a specialist will review them. If the answer is that nothing further is realistic, we will tell you that plainly.

For an allogeneic transplant using a related donor, yes — the donor must be evaluated and undergo the collection procedure in Korea. We arrange visa documentation for the donor as well as the patient.

Longer than most treatments. Transplant involves conditioning, the transplant itself, and a monitored recovery period during which the patient must remain accessible to the hospital. The hospital gives a minimum length of stay with the cost estimate.

The hospital issues a written estimate after reviewing the case. It varies substantially with the transplant type and length of admission. MEDIWIN adds no fees to your medical bill — you pay the hospital directly.
